OSRS Journey: Unlocking the Map and Collecting Rare Items

Aug-30-2024 PST

Trader Steve, our intrepid adventurer, is on a quest to amass as many rare items as possible, starting from the Grand Exchange chunk and unlocking new chunks with each new treasure worth over one million coins. Today, we dive into the thrilling world of Barrows, construction upgrades, and strategic investments to enhance our progress.

The Quest for Rare Items

In our last episode, Trader Steve made significant strides in Mauritania and reached the Barrows chunk. Our goal now is to boost our Barrows efficiency and unlock new chunks to continue our adventure.

Improving Barrows Efficiency

Barrows runs are crucial for acquiring valuable items, but they can be quite inefficient without proper upgrades. Trader Steve’s initial strategy was to enhance the efficiency of these runs. To do so, we need to address two major issues: restoring prayer and teleporting back to the bank.

Prayer Restoration: Currently, Trader Steve lacks a convenient way to restore prayer. The solution? Upgrading his house to include a chapel and an altar. By reaching level 45 Construction, Trader Steve will gain access to these features, allowing for quick prayer restoration and streamlined Barrows runs.

Teleportation: A mounted Glory in the house will provide easy access to Edgeville, reducing the time spent running between the Barrows Crypt and the bank.

Investing in Construction

Trader Steve decided to invest his 1.3 million coins into Construction. Here’s the plan:

Building a Chapel and Altar: At level 45 Construction, Trader Steve can build a chapel and an altar in his house. This will allow for efficient prayer restoration.

Mounted Glory: Adding a mounted Glory provides a direct teleport to Edgeville, greatly improving travel efficiency.

Trader Steve's method involves using Oak planks to build and upgrade his house. The location in Remington is ideal for noting planks, making this process relatively efficient. After burning through 1,200 Oak planks, Trader Steve reached level 47 Construction, gaining access to the mounted Glory and chapel.

Acquiring the Strange Old Lockpick

To further streamline Barrows runs, Trader Steve purchases the Strange Old Lockpick for 150,000 OSRS gold. This item allows Trader Steve to unlock doors in the Barrows Crypt without needing to navigate around obstacles, saving valuable time.

The Barrows Grind

Trader Steve’s Barrows runs have been productive. Here’s a summary of recent findings:

Guthan’s Warspear: A classic Barrows item, valued at around 300,000 coins. Despite its historical significance, its value has depreciated over time.

Torag’s Platelegs: Another item worth approximately 300,000 coins. While not the most valuable, it adds to the collection and helps in the quest for rarer items.

Dharok’s Platelegs: This item, valued at around 1 million coins, is a significant find. It’s a key item for Trader Steve’s collection and progress.

Trader Steve’s current collection includes several 300,000 coin items and a few more valuable ones. The strategy is to sell duplicates and invest in new items, allowing for continued progress and chunk unlocking.

Expanding the Map: Unlocking New Chunks

Trader Steve’s ultimate goal is to unlock a quest cave, which requires completing the Shades of Mort’ton quest. To achieve this, we need to:

Unlock the North and South Taverly Chunks: These chunks are crucial for gaining access to Herb Lore, required for the quest.

Evaluate Routes to Taverly: Trader Steve has two primary routes:

1. Via Falador: Unlocking Falador and navigating through multiple chunks.

2. Via Catherby: Using charterships and unlocking chunks along the way.

A third option, using the hot air balloon transportation system, presents a more efficient route. To unlock this system, Trader Steve needs to complete the Enlightened Journey quest, which requires 20 Firemaking and 20 Quest Points.

Completing Enlightened Journey

To unlock the hot air balloon system, Trader Steve starts by training Firemaking. Using firelighters to speed up early levels, Trader Steve reaches level 50 Firemaking. This level allows for the burning of Maple logs, optimizing training efficiency.

Quest Requirements:

  • Firemaking Level: Achieved 50.

  • Quest Points: Trader Steve completes several quests, including Sheep Herder, Imp Catcher, and Witch’s Potion, reaching the required 20 Quest Points.

With Enlightened Journey completed, Trader Steve gains access to the hot air balloon transportation system, allowing for quicker travel to Taverly and other locations.

Next Steps: Unlocking Herb Lore and Future Plans

With the hot air balloon system unlocked, Trader Steve can efficiently travel to Taverly, allowing access to the Herb Lore store and other valuable resources. The next major goal is to unlock the North and South Taverly chunks to complete the Shades of Mort’ton quest.

Investment and Strategy

Trader Steve plans to invest in items that will further aid in collecting rare treasures and unlocking new chunks. The Dragon Crossbow, worth around 2 million coins, is a strategic purchase that enhances Trader Steve’s combat capabilities.

Final Thoughts

Trader Steve’s journey is a testament to strategic planning and efficient resource management. From upgrading his house for better Barrows runs to unlocking new transportation methods, every decision is carefully made to maximize progress and collection efficiency.
